Cross-CDT Student Workshop in Statistics and Machine Learning

Edinburgh, 30-31 August 2016

Ground floor, Informatics Forum, 10 Crichton Street, Edinburgh (Directions)

Organisers: Charles Sutton

Workshop

This workshop aims to bring together students studying at Centres for Doctoral Training throughout the UK who are studying statistics and machine learning.

The goal is for students to learn about each other's research, build connections, and discuss both training and research across different CDTs and different research fields.

This is a joint effort of several EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training whose remit includes statistics and machine learning, including

  • EPSRC CDT in Data Science (Edinburgh)
  • EPSRC Statistics and Operational Research CDT in Partnership with Industry (Lancaster)
  • EPSRC CDT in Autonomous, Intelligent Machines and Systems (AIMS) (Oxford)
  • EPSRC & MRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generational Statistical Science: the Oxford-Warwick Statistical Programme (Oxford)
  • EPSRC CDT in Cloud Computing for Big Data (Newcastle)

Students from other CDTs whose research interests are in a relevant area are also welcome.

Registration

Please register via Eventbrite so that we can get numbers for catering. The costs of the workshop will need to covered by your CDT. Please check with them for approval that they will cover the cost.

Travel

Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements. By train the nearest station is Edinburgh Waverley, which is less than a 15 minute walk from the forum. See National Rail Enquiries for train information. For those coming from further afield, information about travel to and from Edinburgh Airport is available. A taxi to the city centre from the airport costs about 22GBP to 24GBP one way. There is an express bus from the airport called Airlink that terminates in the city centre and costs 7GBP for a return journey. The journey to the airport requires approximately 30 minutes from the city centre of actual journey time (add a little more during the rush hours). There is also a tram that goes to the centre of town. It takes a little longer than the bus, and is slightly more expensive.

Hotels

The main student accommodation that we have available is via the University of Edinburgh dormitories at Pollock Halls. You can book a dormitory room here. Because of the proximity to the peak travel time in Edinburgh, you should book accommodation as soon as possible. A list of suggested hotels is also available on the website of the CSML network workshop, which is collocated with this event (see next section).

Colocated Events

The workshop is also collocated with two related events that you may wish to stay for:

Both of these workshops have free registration, but if you plan to attend them, you should both make sure to register for each one indiviually (they will have instructions on their web pages), and also make sure that your CDT is willing to cover the additional travel costs.

Visiting

The workshop is timed to start just after the end of the Edinburgh Festival season. Both the international festival and the Fringe will be running over the weekend and on Monday. The Fireworks Concert will be held on Monday night.

Sponsors

This workshop is sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
